We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who is comfortable taking ownership of backend systems, thinking beyond implementation, and contributing to architectural and product-level decisions.

About the Position

We are supporting a technology company building high-trust, mission-critical platforms used in regulated and security-sensitive environments. These systems support analytics, simulations, and operational decision-making where reliability, performance, and engineering judgement are critical.

This is a role for someone who can reason about system behaviour, scalability, and trade-offs - not just deliver code.

About the Project:

• Designing and developing backend services that support analytical dashboards, simulations, and decision-support workflows.
• Building and evolving APIs used by frontend applications and external consumers.
• Working with relational and non-relational databases to support high-throughput data ingestion and low-latency access.
• Implementing backend logic for data processing, aggregation, and analytics pipelines.
• Ensuring backend services are reliable, scalable, testable, and production-ready.
• Collaborating closely with frontend engineers, product stakeholders, and technical leadership to align system behaviour, data contracts, and architecture decisions.
• Identifying technical risks, performance bottlenecks, and opportunities to improve system maintainability.
• Working in a senior, autonomous engineering environment with strong ownership of backend components.

What You Bring to the Position:

• At least 4 years production experience with Python backend development.
• At least 4 years experience with FastAPI or similar frameworks.
• Solid understanding of backend architecture and API design.
• Experience working with relational and non-relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MongoDB.
• Strong ability to reason about performance, scalability, and system reliability
• Proven experience working autonomously and owning technical areas end-to-end
• Strong communication skills and ability to translate product requirements into backend solutions.
• Ability to work autonomously in a distributed team environment.

Nice to Have

• Containerisation technologies such as Docker
• CI/CD pipeline experience (e.g. GitHub Actions)
• Cloud environments such as AWS (ECR, ECS, S3 or similar)
• Observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Tempo or similar)
• Backend testing strategies and tooling
• GitHub-based development workflows
• Understanding of security, reliability, and data-sensitivity in distributed systems

Remote & Work Model

• Remote-first role
• Candidates must be based in Portugal
• Occasional on-site presence in the client may be required
• No visa sponsorship available
