Job Summary

The EHS Lead is responsible for ensuring that all projects maintain a safe and compliant condition at all times. This includes initiating and implementing the company's health and safety policies to prevent injury, illness, damage, and wastage. The role demands a thorough understanding of statutory requirements affecting company operations and involves promoting safety policies, conducting regular inspections, and ensuring the implementation of corrective actions. The EHS Lead collaborates closely with project managers, site teams, and regulatory bodies to foster a culture of safety and compliance across all construction activities.


Main Responsibilities and Requirements for the EHS Lead:

Responsibilities:

  • Safety Program Development and Implementation: Design, implement, and enforce comprehensive safety policies and procedures. Develop and maintain emergency response and preparedness plans tailored to construction activities, Promote and disseminate the company's health and safety policies to all employees and stakeholders.
  • Training and Education: Conduct safety training sessions and site inductions for employees, contractors and subcontractors. Ensure all site operatives and subcontractors are provided with appropriate inductions and training. Educate staff on the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Maintain records with safety incidents, site inspection, training sessions and corrective actions. Prepare and submit detailed EHS reports to regulatory agencies and company management.
  • Site Inspections and Audits: Conduct regular safety inspections on all construction sites and provide feedback to site manager, the HSQE Director, and the Construction Director. Ensure safety inspections are recorded and follow up on the closure of identified actions within specified timescales. Perform internal EHS audits and coordinate with external auditors during regulatory inspections.
  • Incident Investigation and Reporting: Support project managers in conducting thorough accident investigations and compiling detailed closeout reports. Investigate incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Prepare comprehensive incident reports and ensure timely implementation of corrective measures.
  • Environmental Management: Oversee environmental programs related to waste management, air quality, water protection, and hazardous materials. Ensure all COSHH related items are stored and promote sustainability initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and site supervisors to integrate EHS considerations into project planning and execution. Liaise with regulatory agencies, clients, and community stakeholders on EHS matters.
  • Continuous Improvement: Promote a culture of continuous improvement in EHS practices and safety culture. Stay updated on industry best practices, technological advancements, and regulatory changes. Lead initiatives to enhance safety, health, and environmental performance within the organization.
  • Policy and Statutory Requirements: Ensure projects always remain in safe and compliant conditions. Understand and implement statutory requirements affecting the company operations. Display all statutory safety notices on appropriate noticeboards.
  • Permits and Risk Management: Ensure permits to work are completed correctly and appropriately for the tasks to be undertaken. Review and approve risk and method statements to ensure they are suitable for the tasks being performed. Verify that all projects have suitable welfare and site setup facilities in place.
  • Disciplinary and Corrective Actions: Reprimand any staff members who fail to satisfactorily discharge their responsibilities for health and safety. Ensure corrective actions from safety reports and inspections are implemented and documented.


Requirements:

  • A NEBOSH Construction Certificate / or country equivalent
  • Experience of working on a UK/Portuguese construction site
  • Full, clean driving license.
  • Sound knowledge of UK/Portuguese Health and Safety Legislation
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to interpret Health and Safety Legislation and good knowledge of the SQEMS procedures.
  • Effective time management and logical decision-making ability
  • Capacity to work effectively in fast paced pressured environments
  • Ability to communicate at all levels
