Your new RoleThe Data Engineer Team Leader will provide technical leadership for Data Engineering on Azure Databricks, owning the design and implementation of complex Data pipelines and high-quality Data products, while establishing engineering standards and mentoring Data Engineers.
This person will collaborate closely with the Data & Platform Architect, Data & ML Platform Engineering Manager, Data Engineers, DevOps, QA, BI/Analytics, Data Governance, Information Security, and source system/application teams, as well as external partners such as Microsoft and other hyperscale.
The Data Engineer Team Leader will:
- Lead the design and implementation of complex pipelines and Data products on Databricks (Python/SQL);
- Define and enforce engineering standards (including coding patterns, testing, CI/CD, documentation and monitoring);
- Perform code reviews, mentor Data Engineers, and support skills development;
- Partner with DevOps on deployments, environment management, and infrastructure dependencies;
- Implement and enforce Data Contracts and oversee Data Quality Controls, reconciliation processes, and automated validation;
- Optimize performance and cost across jobs, clusters, and storage;
- Support incident triage and root-cause analysis, driving long-term fixes and preventive improvements;
- Ensure operational excellence and adherence to Data contracts and quality standards.
A typical day will include leading technical delivery across multiple workstreams, reviewing designs and code, optimizing pipeline performance, supporting production operations, and collaborating across platform, governance, and analytics teams to ensure reliable and scalable Data solutions.
What you will need to succeed
As a Data Engineer Team Leader, you will need:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field;
- +7 years of experience in Data Engineering;
- Experience designing and delivering scalable Data Pipelines (batch and streaming), incremental processing, and curated Data Layers (Medallion architecture);
- Experience with hyperscale and Databricks;
- Experience with modern DataOps/DevOps practices (including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring and alerting), using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub workflows and DBT;
- Experience mentoring Engineers and leading technical delivery across multiple concurrent workstreams;
- Experience supporting production operations within agreed rotations;
- Experience optimizing Spark jobs (partitioning, caching, and cluster tuning);
- Strong understanding of end-to-end Data Pipeline design and operational Data Engineering practices;
- Strong Python and SQL skills;
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills;
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, distributed team;
- Excellent communication skills – Fluency in English.
