The Client:


A leading industrial packaging manufacturer with a strong footprint across Southern Europe, specialising in rigid packaging solutions for food, household and industrial applications. Backed by significant Group investment, the business has recently expanded its production capabilities in Portugal and is now entering a key phase of commercial growth and market development.

The organisation combines the agility of a local operation with the scale, systems and strategic backing of a multinational Group, creating a platform for a commercially driven leader to make a visible impact.


The Role:


The Commercial Director holds full commercial responsibility for the Portugal production centre, leading all sales, customer management and market development activities - this role is pivotal in translating recent capital investment into sustained revenue growth, improved market penetration and stronger customer partnerships.

The role combines hands-on commercial leadership with strategic planning, overseeing a local commercial team and acting as the senior commercial interface between Portugal, Group leadership and key customers.


Key Responsibilities:


Commercial Leadership & Strategy:


  • Full commercial accountability for sales performance, revenue growth and market development in Portugal.
  • Define and execute the local commercial strategy in alignment with Group objectives and investment plans.
  • Translate new production capabilities into compelling customer propositions and sustainable market share growth.
  • Develop and deliver robust sales plans, budgets and forecasts, with clear performance tracking and reporting.
  • Act as the senior commercial representative of the Portugal operation within the wider Group structure.


People Leadership:


  • Lead, motivate and develop the local commercial team (sales representatives and sales support).
  • Build a performance-driven culture with clear objectives, accountability and professional development.
  • Embed Group commercial processes, standards and reporting disciplines within the Portugal business.
  • Foster strong collaboration with Operations, Supply Chain and Finance to ensure seamless execution.


Sales & Market Execution:


  • Manage and grow key customer relationships across Portugal, ensuring strong customer proximity and retention.
  • Identify, target and convert new business opportunities aligned to production capabilities and strategic priorities.
  • Oversee pricing, contract negotiation and commercial terms in line with margin and growth objectives.
  • Ensure effective pipeline management, opportunity tracking and CRM discipline.
  • Represent the business in customer negotiations and high-level commercial discussions.



Business & Market Development:


  • Expand the company's footprint in priority market segments within Portugal.
  • Monitor competitor activity and market trends to inform commercial decision-making.
  • Support product portfolio development and positioning in collaboration with Group stakeholders.
  • Contribute market intelligence and customer insight into broader Group strategy discussions.


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Industrial, Chemical or Mechanical preferred), Business Administration, Marketing or a related discipline.
  • Master's degree or MBA highly desirable.
  • Minimum 10 years' professional experience, with 3-5 years in a senior commercial leadership role (Sales Manager / Commercial Director).
  • Experience within an industrial manufacturing environment; strong preference for plastics, packaging, converting or adjacent sectors.
  • Proven track record in key account management, business development and leading commercial teams.
  • Experience operating within a Group or matrix structure and reporting to international stakeholders.
